We recently had the honor of sailing with Nikki and Theo for their wedding aboard the Cloud 9 IV yacht, plying the waters around New York City.
Nikki and Theo’s marriage took place on Memorial Day weekend and what a great occassion to celebrate this couple whose American love story captures what’s so great about this country of ours.
Nikki’s family is from India, and Theo’s family is from Bulgaria. For their big day, they combined the wedding traditions from their ancestral lands.
The day started with the Cloud 9’s departure from its Manhattan dock on 23rd Street and the FDR Drive. As we headed to Jersey City to pickup Nikki and Theo’s guests, Nikki posed inher wedding sari and showed off her mehendi.
While the wedding guests came aboard the Cloud 9, Nikki swapped out her sari for wedding dress number 2 with the help of her mom and mother-in-law.
After completing our getting ready coverage, we fanned out across the decks to photograph details.
The ceremony began with entrance of the ring bearer and the flower girl, followed by Nikki’s cousin who served as officiant.
There were a number of ethnic wedding traditions from both the bride and groom’s sides, starting with the Indian ritual of the bride and groom exchanging flower garlands.
This was followed by a ring exchange, then bride and groom crowning themselves with flowers in the Bulgarian tradition.
Another Bulgaria tradition was the bride and groom taking their first drink together as husband and wife.
After this came another Hindu tradition, saatphere. The bride and groom are tied together with scarves and then walk seven times around a ceremonial fire to symbolize their marriage throughout seven lifetimes.
After the ceremony, it was time for couple creatives inside the yacht’s ballroom and on the ship’s upper deck with the beautiful backdrop of the New York City skyline.
As night fell on New York harbor , the reception got underway with good humor and Bollywood dancing — an all around beautiful wedding created by two cultures coming together in the great melting pot that is the USA.
Congratulations Nikki & Theo! We wish you many years of happiness as you set out on your journey together as husband and wife.
